Edgy Flamenco Jazz

Edgy Flamenco Jazz

  • The Ethan Sultry Band — After living and performing among the Gypsy Flamenco circuit in Seville, Spain for more than a decade, guitarist/composer/vocalist Ethan Sultry (Margolis) brings his edgy Flamenco Jazz hybrid to the Blue Whale on Thursday, March 30. His latest iTunes featured album, Sonikete Blues is an incredibly unique take on previous journeys by artists such as Miles Davis, Chick Corea, John Coltrane, Nat King Cole and Paco de Lucía, as they investigated the relationships between Jazz and Blues with Spanish music... specifically the music of Andalucía.

Joining Ethan Sultry for a thrilling evening of where flamenco and jazz meet are Reggie Hamilton on bass; Katisse Buckingham on flute and sax; Munyungo Jackson on percussion; and Donald Barrett on drums.

Nylon guitarist/vocalist/bandleader, Ethan Sultry (Margolis), lived in Spain for more than a decade. In 2010 he moved to Los Angeles and formed his world quintet whose primary focus is on the open and improvisational space that jazz and flamenco music share. Dissonant chording and pursuit of unique groove patterns are part of his signature. Highly influenced by his mentors within the Gypsy circuit of Andalucía, Sultry’s hybrid compositions reflect the intricate phrasings of his instrumental and vocal melodies. His 2014 release entitled Soleangeles and his 2016 release Sonikete Blues were both featured by iTunes in several countries. Sultry has collaborated with Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes), dancer El Farru, Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía, Judith Hill (20 feet from stardom), and is a featured soloist on Omar Faruk Tekbilek's newest album. Sultry has performed as a soloist around the world and has been featured on All About Jazz, LA Weekly, Los Angeles Times, and the New York Times.

Reggie Hamilton (bass) has toured and/or recorded with a wide array of artists including Seal, Eros Ramazzotti, Babyface, Thalia, Queen Latifah, Billy Childs, Christina Aguilera, Anita Baker, Bette Midler, George Duke, Whitney Houston, Stanley Clarke, David Lynch, John Mellencamp, Warren Zevon, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner and many, many others.

Katisse Buckingham (tenor/alto/soprano saxophones, flute/alto flute, and spoken word) has performed and/or recorded with the Yellowjackets, Prince, Billy Childs, Dr. Dre, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, Andy Summers, Zawinul Legacy Band, Airto & Flora Purim, L.A. Guitar Quartet, Brian Auger, Amos Lee, Strunz & Farah, Colin Hay, Poncho Sanchez, Don Grusin, Pete Yorn, and Vanessa Paradis, among many others. He has played on numerous film soundtracks including the "Jazz Flute" scene from the Will Ferrell film, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, the Golden Globe winning score to the Robert Redford film, All Is Lost, and is a featured soloist on the Universal Pictures animated film Minions.

Munyungo Jackson is a seasoned percussionist who has performed with Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Kenny Loggins, Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves, the Zawinul Syndicate, George Howard, Ronnie Laws, The Temptations, Four Tops, The Supremes, Bennie Maupin, Bill Summers, Marcus Miller, & dozens of others, including numerous ethnic music & dance troupes.

Donald Barrett is the first call drummer for artists such as Toni Braxton, Sade, Seal, New Kids On The Block, Pussycat Dolls, and Colbie Caillat, to name a few. He has also bolstered his session work by appearing on five Josh Kelley albums, the Twilight "Breaking Dawn" Movie Soundtrack, This Christmas Movie Soundtrack, Kikaider Reboot (Japanese action movie), as well as Macy Gray's “The Way” album and has appeared on the MTV Music Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Hart Of Dixie, The Ellen Show, Oprah, Cold Case, All My Children, George Lopez Show, Braxton Family Values, David Letterman, Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Craig Ferguson, Live with Kelly and Michael, Good Morning America, and the Today Show.
